Throughout the weeks, while editing and constantly creating new sentences, yesterday was the first time in which I was able to sit back and see my Extended Essay as a whole, that is in a holistic way rather reductionist. Seeing as how everything has been able to connect and combine into one piece, it definitely makes one view the paper differently. As I began writing, I viewed Trump as a radical and controversial politician who instead of creating a sense of unity, does the complete opposite by encouraging polarization into the American societies. However, as his practices have often produced public outcries, I was curious as to see in what way Trump has gained so many followers in his wake. As far as I knew, not a single one of my family members or friends have rooted for this candidate. This confusion has led me to perform this exploration in which I have finally understood that one of the major influential factors that have been inflicted upon the general public is not the a...

Second Draft

I am nearly done with my extended essay overall. It has taken a complete turn, from the analysis of three politicians to only one, Donald Trump. At first, I was skeptical of this new change, however, later on, I understood how the essay becomes more focused and I had an easier time analyzing his tweets in comparison to the rhetoric of Sean Spicer or Janusz Korwin-Mikke. Overall I am very pleased with my work. Although it required a lot more effort for my second draft, it was definitely worth it. My perspective over the course of this essay on Trump has completely changed. While I started off with my vision of Trump as a power-mongering politician who acquired his power using his stash of money, it has significantly altered. Through analyzing his rhetoric, I have realized that Trump isn't equipped with a third graders tongue but with years of experience in media and social platforms. No wonder Trump has won the presidential elections, even against a tough candidate such as Hilla...

First Draft

Image
I am pretty much done with my first draft. While I'm reading it over and over, trying to find some mistakes, I realize how my view of politics and these politicians has been changed and shaped over the course of my first draft. I was quite neutral in the beginning, holding no political preference. The reason I chose to analyze right wing media is not because I was biased but because there are a couple of extremist politicians who are known for their controversies in the right wing. Even though this exploration has helped me realize how manipulative politicians can be, I cannot place my blame on the right wing parties. It would be unorthodox of me to only analyze the right wing media and to find myself favoring the left wing. Even though I haven't analyzed left wing, I have come to realize that no matter what party you are in, you will at least a couple of times disgrace the population with your manipulative skills and tactics as a politician. Although I held no bias toward...

Introduction

Here is my first draft of an introduction:  George Orwell in his essay of “Politics and the English Language” identifies the mistakes that a myriad of people often make which cause the corruption of the english language. Orwell defines several ‘tricks’ or tactics with examples that hide the true meaning and cause this corruption. He also claims that awareness on this topic is “[…] a necessary first step toward political regeneration […]”  since he has brought his attention to how politicians tend to take advantage of language and twisting it to whatever they desire from their audience.  This then brings on the question of:  “What elements from George Orwell’s ‘Politics and the English Language’ can we find in the right winged media in the United States political speeches?”  George Orwell’s points of the mistakes are dying metaphors, operators or verbal false limbs, pretentious diction and meaningless words. With examples, Orwell provides us a life learning ...

Trumps language

As of recent, I have brought my attention to Trumps language as I am beginning to analyze his tweets for the main body of my EE. With the help of the youtube video  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aFo_BV-UzI, I realized how in comparison to other politicians who sound very sophisticated, Trump uses very simple speech. He often repeats words to create an emphasis on them and doesn't seem to try to make an air of intelligence around with words. Maybe he does it with his body language or ego but not with english. I have also noticed with his speech that he is very self-centered. Instead of using the common persuasive technique of using pronouns such as "we" or "us" to provide connection with the audience, Trump makes the theme of a discussion about him. In almost none of his tweets does he use personal pronouns but words like "I" or "me". It is interesting why Trump decides to do this, whether he even realizes it.

Sean Spicer

Here are some comments I found that Sean Spicer has said in an interview: MR. SPICER: I’m not going to get into what the President did or did not discuss. But what your question assumes is a lot of facts that are not substantiated by anything but anonymous sources that are, so far, being leaked out. Q Does he approve of that action? MR. SPICER: You’re asking if he approves of an action that is not a confirmed action . That being said, I think Secretary Kelly and General McMaster have both discussed that, in general terms, back channels are an appropriate part of diplomacy.     Implies that the interviewer isn't very  intelligent , asking unnecessary questions      Will not get into because he doesn't need to. Suggests that he has authority over another person.  https://www.bostonglobe.com/2017/05/30/read-full-transcript-sean-spicer-tuesday-press-briefing/Ip6GxQsCbVwyNk8kZlpO5O/story.html

Abstract

Here is my finished abstract. Politicians are officials who are meant to keep the country moving on, progressing, conquering the next frontier. Nowadays however, they deem to do what favors and progresses themselves. As Orwell said himself: “politics is a mass of lies, evasions, folly, hatred and schizophrenia” (.  George Orwell’s essay on the “Politics and the English Language” presents a connection between the “political chaos” and the “decay of language”. From several texts, Orwell exhibits the disputes seen and presents solutions to them. These include: dying metaphors, operators or verbal false limbs, pretentious diction and meaningless words.  This extended essay aims to analyze: “What elements from George Orwell’s ‘Politics and the English Language’ can we find in the right winged media in the United States political speeches?” This analytical process has been divided into different stages and sources of right wing media and political speeches. I have investig...
